Colorado is home to so many amazing places it’s hard to know where to start when planning a trip. Well, we did the hard work for you, so worry not. Follow this guide for the ultimate guide to family getaways in Colorado.

1. Glenwood Springs

Be it your journey’s end or simply a stop along the way through western Colorado, Glenwood Springs is a world-class destination no matter the time of year. Nestled near the White River National Forest at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Hwy. 82, this mountain town is truly a four-season paradise. Known for its abundant hot springs, towering aspen stands, and mountainous landscape, there’s something here for the entire family. Glenwood Springs sits at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers, and these waterways offer everything from blue-ribbon trout fishing to thrilling whitewater. For those who want to stretch their legs, check out one of the many trails in the area. Hanging Lake, with emerald-blue waters is one of the region’s most popular. Note: it’s temporarily closed due to construction, but the new trail is expected to open again this summer!

Another great way to see the sights is on a bicycle, which you can easily rent in town, and explore all the wonders of Glenwood Canyon along the Recreation Trail. If you’re looking for fun for the whole family, check Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. With everything from thrill rides to cave tours inside Iron Mountain, this attraction will keep the fun meter on high. And last but certainly not least, the hot springs are truly what sets Glenwood Springs apart from other towns. With over five places to soak, there’s no shortage of opportunities to relax in the water after a day well spent in the outdoors.

2. Arkansas River

If you’re traveling through Colorado during warmer weather, the Arkansas River is one of the best family getaways in Colorado. The primary species along the river’s 152-mile course is brown trout, and you can catch them from the bank or a boat. Look to fish in the river’s calmer sections. The Arkansas is a river of diverse character, and it turns from a placid stream to a raging current and back again numerous times. For whitewater enthusiasts, the Royal Gorge is la crème de la crème.
