8 Adventure Date Ideas Near Colorado Springs (From Mild to Wild)

The best adventure dates near Colorado Springs include whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River, walking or ziplining the Royal Gorge, sunrise hot air balloon rides, red-rock hikes, backcountry UTV drives, and hot springs soaks, most within 30 to 90 minutes of downtown.

Every Colorado Springs date guide recommends the same spa day, the same jazz club, the same candlelit dinner. This guide is for couples who would rather earn that dinner.

We have been guiding trips in this corridor since 1973, and we organized the list from mild to wild so you can find something that works even when your adventure appetites do not match.

How to Pick: The Mild-to-Wild Rule

Choose your adventure based on the more cautious partner’s comfort level, not the bolder one’s ambition. Nearly everything below comes in a mild and a wild version, so nobody has to sit in the car. Nail the mild version together and the wild version usually books itself for the next trip.

1. Hike the Red Rocks Together (Mild to Medium)

Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and Seven Falls are all within 20 minutes of downtown, and a golden-hour walk among the formations is the easiest great date in the region.

One honest note: the Manitou Incline is a bucket-list workout, not a date. Do it together only if you both truly want to suffer, and take Barr Trail down.

2. Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride (Mild)

Local outfitters like Adventures Out West and Rainbow Ryders launch at dawn for 360-degree views of Pikes Peak and the plains, usually capped with a champagne toast. Flights are weather-dependent and mornings only, so book it early in your trip in case you need a backup day.

It’s hard to beat watching Colorado wake up from a few thousand feet above the ground.

3. Raft the Arkansas River, Matched to Your Nerve (Mild to Wild)

The closest real whitewater to Colorado Springs is the Arkansas River near Cañon City, about an hour southwest, and it comes in three couple-friendly flavors. If one of you said absolutely not to rapids, the Cottonwood Canyon scenic float is calm Class I–II water with stunning canyon views.

The classic couples pick is Bighorn Sheep Canyon, offering splashy Class II–III rapids with relaxed stretches in between and bighorn sheep along the banks. And for the story you’ll be telling forever, the Royal Gorge delivers Class IV+ whitewater beneath 1,000-foot granite walls. That one is genuinely demanding, so save it for when you are both all in.

Quarter-day and half-day trips fit easily into a date day, our guides handle the steering, and if you would rather have the whole day planned for you, the River & Rail package pairs a scenic Royal Gorge Train ride with your raft trip, lunch included.

4. Walk (or Zip Across) the Royal Gorge (Mild to Wild)

At Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, the mild version is strolling America’s highest suspension bridge hand in hand, the medium is the gondola, and the wild is ziplining across the gorge itself.

It sits 15 minutes from the Cañon City raft put-in, which is why so many couples pair the two in one day.

5. Soak in Hot Springs (Mild)

SunWater Spa in Manitou Springs offers open-air cedar tubs filled with mineral water just minutes from downtown, while Desert Reef Hot Springs in Florence is a natural mineral hot springs oasis surrounded by wide-open desert and mountain views. Either one is a pretty solid recovery move after anything in the wild column.

6. Backcountry UTV or ATV Day (Medium)

Rent a UTV in Woodland Park, 30 minutes from the Springs, and follow mapped trails to Pikes Peak vistas. Or head our way for the ATV + Raft combo out of Cotopaxi and get dirt and whitewater in the same day.

 7. Learn to Fly Fish Together (Mild)

The Arkansas River near Cotopaxi is Gold Medal trout water, and a guided fly fishing trip is the most underrated date on this list. It is quiet, it is teachable, one guide coaches you both, and nobody has to be brave.

Choose a walk-and-wade trip to explore the river on foot or a float fishing trip to cover more water by boat. It also shines in spring and fall when the bigger adventures wind down.

8. Drive Skyline Drive at Golden Hour (Mild, Free)

This one-way ridge road above Cañon City is dramatic, slightly white-knuckle, and completely free. Pair it with a tasting at the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey down the hill and you have built a full afternoon for the price of a bottle.

Build Your Date Day: Two Ready-Made Pairings

The best adventure dates pair one activity from the wild column with one from the mild column.

  • The Classic: Morning Bighorn Sheep Canyon raft trip, lunch in Cañon City, an afternoon at the winery or the bridge, and dinner back in the Springs by 7 PM.
  • The Big One: Royal Gorge rafting in the morning, a hot springs soak on the drive home, and a celebratory dinner for a milestone worth remembering.

Want to skip the drive home entirely? Our overnight rafting trips camp riverside under the stars at Cotopaxi.
