One day just isn’t enough
Enjoy Gold Medal Water fly fishing away from crowds with a Browns Canyon overnight fly fishing trip! This trip is designed to have as few people on the river as possible as you fly-fish, with a serene evening trip on day one and an early-bird trip on day two.
Fly fishing Browns Canyon in Colorado is a one-of-a-kind, exclusive wilderness adventure.
ART has a rare permit that allows us to stay on the water after 5 PM, meaning we often have prine fishing holes to ourselves as we enjoy some of the best fly fishing in Colorado.
Browns Canyon National Monument offers a stunning, remote setting for an unparalleled dry fly fishing adventure with minimal river traffic in the evenings allowing for ample opportunities to cast dry flies to hungry trout.
You’ll spend the whole day enjoying some world-class fly fishing and then retire to a stunning riverside campsite for a hearty, guide-made meal and lounging around the campfire. Then, wake up to the aroma of coffee and breakfast by the riverside before hopping on the river all over again!
Our Browns Canyon overnight trip is a fantastic option for anglers who want to escape the standard wade fishing crowds and embark on a fly fishing trip through the remote Colorado wilderness. This overnight adventure gets you on the river with a rod for afternoon, evening and morning fishing so you can experience the difference in fish activity throughout the day.
While this trip is best for individuals who know how to cast out and have a bit of fishing experience, prior experience is not required. If you have individuals in your group that has not tried fly fishing before, our guides are here to help! Your guide can angle the raft closer to fishing spots for individuals who have a shorter or unpracticed cast.

Fish the banks, pocket water and private property floating from the boat through some of our 102 miles of gold medal-designated water.
The Browns Canyon fly fishing trip takes place in the National Monument where you will fish and camp under the stars.
Depending on the day we may be fishing dry flies, nymphs or streamers. If you do not have prior experience, we will teach you on the fly!
Your fly fishing adventure starts with a midday meetup at our rafting outpost at 19487 US Hwy 50, Cotopaxi, CO. Our outpost is about 1.5 hours from Colorado Springs and 30 minutes from Salida. Please plan to arrive at 12:45 for a smooth start to the trip. Once you arrive, our team will greet you, check you in, and ensure that your group is ready to hit the rapids.
We will supply you with a large dry bag to keep your personal items secure on the boat. If you need any additional camping or fishing gear, we have top-of-the-line gear rentals available to you.
Once you have everything you need for a great trip, we will shuttle about one hour to Johnson Village the put-in. During the ride, you can talk with your guide about the river, hear some crazy fishing stories, and take in the Sawatch Range in the distance as we approach Browns Canyon.
Once we get to the put-in, your guide will give you a run-down of what to expect on the water. If you have never tried float fly fishing before, they will give you a crash course on how to cast from the raft seat, raft safety, and other important tips for the water.
Once everyone is feeling confident, it’s time to hop on the river!
Day one overnight adventure starts with some late afternoon float fishing in some prime fishing holes as you make your way towards camp. After we break for a hearty dinner at the campsite, we head back out for some coveted evening fishing – something many don’t have the permits to enjoy! After we have our day’s fill of the river, we’ll head back to camp to relax around the fire, stargaze, and get ready for an early morning of fly fishing.
Day two starts out bright and early with a delicious hot breakfast and coffee before we hop on the river while it’s still quiet. We will enjoy hours of fishing before the rafters and kayakers really start ramping up for the day. As we fish and float down the river, you can get helpful advice from your raft guide, hear interesting stories of the area, and, of course, talk fishing all trip long.
We will reach the take out right before lunch, so you can explore Canon City or Salida for a perfect pit stop to toast to a fantastic fishing trip!
Fly Fishing Browns Canyon National Monument
Whether by serendipity or apt naming, Browns Canyon is best known for Brown trout. When you fish in this canyon, you’re sure to come across several hefty browns with some big rainbow trout in the mix as well. Your guide knows this river like the back of their hand, so they know just where to take you for a successful hook. Browns Canyon is full of the honey holes and drop-offs where trout love to hang out.
The special part about this trip is the opportunity to beat the crowds and fish when the water is empty. Because we have a unique permit that allows for fishing after 5pm, we can fish under the sunset long after rafters and kayakers have gone home for the day. Especially in the summertime, golden hour and twilight can be a fantastic time to reel in some trout looking for a bedtime snack.
When it’s time to hit the hay, we’ll have a comfortable remote campsite with beautiful views of the river. You can sit around the campfire and swap stories under the stars as you count down the minutes until tomorrow morning’s fishing excursion.

Browns Canyon National Monument Views
Browns Canyon has been a formal national monument since 2015, thanks to the rugged granite cliffs, vibrant rock outcroppings and stunning mountain vistas that have made this a popular area for nature lovers and archeologists alike.
We pair that with the Gold Medal Water of the Arkansas River, and you have a goldmine of flyfishing beauty and fun! To land the reputation and title of a Gold Medal designation, a body of water must consistently support a minimum trout stock of 60 lbs per acre and a minimum size of 14″. The Arkansas River holds 170 lbs per acre with fish sizes ranging from 10” to 16”!
No! For people that have never fly-fished, the Arkansas River wade fishing option is usually better as it allows for more instruction time. That said, we do take people to float fishing with no experience as our guides can adjust the positioning of the boat based on your casting ability.
Yes, you do and you can obtain one at Colorado Parks & Wildlife!
Transportation to and from the river, PFD/life jacket and lunch on full-day tours. Fishing gear is available for rent.
We recommend bringing your own flies. That said, your guide will be stocked with all flies and tackle needed for the day (as a backup). If you lose a lot of your guides’ flies, it is customary to reimburse them.
No. Our fishing boats have hard floors, swivel seats and lean bars. Fishing can be done either standing or sitting down. The only walking during the Browns Canyon fishing trip is to get in or out of the boat.
